Hello and welcome back to another episode of Sativa Talk Podcast. This is your host Angie T. I do want to give a shout out to our sponsors, The Biz West for sponsoring this show, bringing me back on air and back into the airways. I have a very special show. This is my second episode Here's the TV talk podcast as mentioned before we like to talk lifestyle entrepreneurship and everything sativa well Cannabis, but to see if it sounds cooler. So just just go with it. All right One of my guests I have here is the mr. Larry Smith infamously known in these Las Vegas streets he is the owner of g5 cultivation, but also my boss. I work with G5 cultivation as well. And I have learned a lot while working under the G5 umbrella. And I felt it only right to bring him on so he can give you a couple of the jewels that he's dropped on me throughout this time. So without further ado, Larry Smith, welcoming me in.
0:01:32
Hello, hello, hello.
0:01:33
Let me clarify one thing. I'm not your boss. I've always told you, like, I mean, people will say those titles, but we work together. You know I'm saying because I want you to be a boss. And you are you are definitely your own boss and you're working your way to that. I always I don't never tell people they work for me or you know, I try to dispel that because I want you to I want to my legacy is I want to be on and be like yo, Angie, me and I used to work together and you know she took off and and hopefully the things that we're going through you can be able to take the good and the bad because you know we always I don't I try not to sugarcoat anything I want you to take those lessons and then we go from there. I appreciate that. Yeah so that's what I mean I always try to tell people that like I don't like when people say oh uh yeah they work for me like like I mean I get it but at the end of the day I mean yeah so let's let's because I want you to have that I want you I want the mentality is everything I mean if we put that in the universe and the mentality is there like I said I want to be able to it's the Dame Dash effect when Dame Dash Rockefeller if you look around like all the people that were around Rockefeller and Dame Dash back then they're all doing something pretty big now. Right? And they started off as interns and whatnot, and you know, but they got a lot of game wisdom and knowledge and they took it. And this one lady, I think she runs BET or something like that. I mean, there's a lot, one runs Rock Nation. Yeah, so I mean, that's the way I kind of want them and hanging around Dame, I really wanted that philosophy. Dame will tell you what you work for him though.
0:03:14
You know what I'm saying?
0:03:15
Without a doubt. Yeah, but mine is just, I tweaked my game a little bit to say, no, I don't want, I saw a quote today that said something like, if you're not, if you're not helping people here on this earth, you know, you're not really living. And I definitely believe in that theory of making sure that, you know, cause one day you may be the, I may need you and you may be in a position to to make things happen for me absolutely I'm saying so you never I tell people you never know in life how the tables can be turned right and situations can be so you I always want to remain humble in that way and if it's something that I want to choose a path in that way and I and you're in that position to help me hey you'd never you'd
0:04:00
never know. I like that. Good energy. Okay. All right. So I wanted to really just dive straight in because I know you get a lot of questions, you get a lot of people that want to start their own strange, you get a lot of all of that stuff. So as best as I can, I know we only have 30 minutes, I want to kind to do a cheat sheet on this stuff. But also letting people know that it's still possible regardless of your background or getting into it because you your background was not in canvas right now
0:04:28
my background is more personal injury property damage I've been in the personal injury game for 25 years I love the I love that side I love helping people I love going up against the big insurance companies I love the fact that they can't stand me I mean I've had a just to say things to me that you're like you should be fired for what you said to me right and now I ain't a snitch but I didn't call the I didn't call the supervisor to the left. Hey, you know what this person said to me? I'm really offended, you know, but I like it's a game. It's like a, it's a game that I like to play and they definitely play a game with people. And I got introduced to the cannabis side and I'm very conflicted about it because you know, going through what I've gone through in the last four or five years, it's humbling. It, it is taking me to a place and I'm pretty sure if there's other, uh, owners out there, they'll all tell you, this is not what they said it was going to be. Like, it's not the big money that everyone thinks that it's going to be. There's a lot of things that they haven't figured out. And you know, I've had people say, you know, do you feel like you're successful in them? I don't, I do want to sense the fact that I feel like we're in this game and the CCB board and these other entities keep moving the goalposts. Every time we go one way, they move it over here, testing all these different variables. We have product that's sitting there that we failed them. If it was on the street, it would be gone. And there's nothing wrong with this. They can say whatever they want to say. There's nothing wrong with this cannabis I mean yeah and I
0:06:03
mean working with within the industry I now realize you know the cannabis that was being consumed back in the day that had no testing wasn't even a thing yeah it's even more dangerous I don't know you feel a little bit more safe knowing that you go to the dispensary and at least this has been tested at least we know they didn't spray any chemicals on it after it's already grown to expand the life the lifespan of it or whatever the case may be. But wait a minute, Larry, you're jumping the gun. So we started with personal injury and then you started G5 Cultivation now, as far as like getting the capital together. How hard was that?
0:06:40
So that was very hard. For me, it was hard. It was different because I took a lot of the other businesses I had. I had homes in my community I bought. So let me go back even further. So started off 16 years old, been betting sports since then. And I was fortunate enough to, you know, in baseball season, I'm really good at baseball, crushing, just crushing the sportsbook to the point where I'm getting kicked out of places, not for doing anything wrong, but for, for winning. Right. And they don't want to see in the movie casino. They don't, it tells you like, they don't want to see winners. They kick the winners out and sports is one place that the player actually has an advantage, right? In Baccarat and Blackjack and craps, the house has the advantage. Sports is a little different. There's a very small number that the casino has. I think it's a 4% hold, I believe, which is not a lot when it comes to it. But listen, it's enough that they make money, but they make it other ways. So I did that, winning money, bought houses. I started my medical lien company, which is in the personal injury sector, the cars, whatnot. So I had a nice chunk of money amassed. So when it came along, I didn't have to raise as much, but we did have to raise capital. So I went to friends that I knew, and they put in with me. And it's been different.
0:07:58
It's definitely a different ballgame, but um, you know, well when you pick the people what what lessons have you learned in regards to Like if you had to do it again, what would your selection be different? Would your process be different or you feel like you chose the right the right team the first time?
0:08:14
I think this I think that no matter what what I say, you know, I've learned a lot and You know, we've taken a lot of a lot of L's on the side, cause you, there's so many different variables, but I've learned something from everything of the process. So like, there's a side of me that's conflicted, that sits back and says, my bank, when I look at my bank account, and go, what was I thinking? Right? You know, I, you know, I could have been in this whole different space, a mental capacity, but you never know what life does, right? So I made the choices I made. I've met a lot of great people, right? So even though I've lost financially on this side so far, which we know one day we'll get it back. And I mean, but I've been able to like meet a lot of great people that I normally would have probably never met.
0:09:02
And when you say loss is just breaking even.
0:09:04
No, I'm saying we're staying afloat now, but I'm in the hole. Like there's make no bones about it. We're in the hole. Like the guy on the street is doing better than me. A hundred percent. I got, I know people that are looking at me like, ha ha, man, you a sucker. You know, you gotta pay 20,000 in taxes. You know, your power bill is 15,000. Like, you know, they don't have these issues. Like, you know, they're doing their thing. And then I know the street's different, and I think the state and the counties and the feds or whoever, they can change all of that. They can crack down on the bus. They can, more importantly, lower the taxes and that would create a profit for us. But it's not, this game really, now that I'm into it, it's really not for us. I mean, in the beginning they made sure that we didn't get in by putting the $250,000 marker on there for people to get in. And the people of color, I know guys that had the 250, they just didn't have it legally. Or they didn't have it to where they had it in the you know under the pillowcase and you know luckily for me all my businesses are ran legitly they're above board there's no fluff it is what it is their taxes paid everything on there and I had the money so I got in but then the second way wasn't about black or brown people the second way was okay I'm gonna let you guys play a little bit and then the big boys are coming in and that's what's kind of happening now the big boys are coming in you know I equate it to gentrification almost like you have these little mom-and-pop stores that people go to the neighborhood all the time and then Walmart pulls up down the street. You know, they're like, you know, your mom-and-pop store is gonna suffer because, you know, you can go get a roll of toilet tissue, 20 roll for $10. Whereas mom-and-pop, you're paying five or six rolls for $5. So you can't compete with that. You know, people are looking for value.
0:10:51
Yeah, and when you guys first came out, you worked with some celebrities as well. And that kind of catapulted G5 and put a stamp on it. How did that kind of evolve? Because I know that that was mentioned on multiple media
0:11:04
blogs.
0:11:04
So I got, I'm really lucky. I got some really good friends. I had a friend, Chris Alvarez. Shout out to Chris Alvarez. He's a New York big time producer of content behind the scenes. There's a lot of work for NYU university. There's those big companies, big corporations, Apple does a lot of stuff. And he was ended up being cool with a, about a cat by the name of Jack Thrill out of Atlanta, who was in New York and he was trying to make it big. And they did a couple of like these really big interview things when they, like they had a, they had a setup and they were like Rihanna, Chris Brown. And like, he blew up and 50 cent, he caught 50 Cent's attention. And he started working for 50 and me and Jack were real cool. So Jack started introducing me to other people. Jack introduced me to the rapper Nori from Drink Champs. From that point, Nori introduced me to Dame Dash. And then me and Dame became really, really good friends. And then from that point, you know, I ended up hooking up with, and I met the rapper Cam'ron. And then from that point, you know, everything else kinda, and that's what I mean by like, I guess it's crazy. I was thinking about this the other day. I used to walk in a room and my medical lien company, which makes a ton of money, right? For very little work. When I say very little work, I mean like, I'm writing a check, getting some paperwork, passing it on, receiving the check, right? Waiting for the mailman every day. Every day is the first and the 15th, right? That's how much money it is, right? So it's really good. You go and I meet people and it's like, hey, how you doing, what do you do? I have a factoring company. It's called factoring when you buy the paper. And they're like, oh, okay, what is that? Didn't you explain to them? I'm like, okay, have a good day. And they push you to the side. And then here I am, I'm not making any money in cannabis. And I walk in the room, hey, they're on G5, hey, come here, let me talk to you. What's up? It's like, it kind of gave me a different status. So I find it ironic that I'm not making any money, but the perception is the status is there. Like, you're like, oh my God. Yeah, but then I'm over here and I'm like, I'm making a ton of money and they're like, get out the way, move. You know, and it's like, it's kind of weird how it works, right? But it is what it is and I'm happy because I've met a lot of great people. Dame, meeting Dame has been a blessing. He's mad at me right now, but it's still been a blessing. And then me and Cameron are super tight. That's my brother, my real brother. I mean, just a good person all the way around the board. What I like about those two is they're from Harlem, but they're very good businessmen. And I'm older than Cam by like three years. But at the same time, I understand that by me being older than him doesn't mean that I'm more wiser. I mean, he's been through some experiences with big record labels for millions and millions of dollars of being jerked over. And he'll tell you those stories if you look at some of the interviews. But for me, I get to listen to those stories and incorporate into my game of what he did the next time around. And you know, yeah, so it's like it was real cool to be around him on a business level. But then the business became friends friends, and then we had another celebrity My last one was a big baby Darren Brand shout out to Darren Brand man. He's he's from Wilding out he's an incredible guy. He pushed the brand like there's no tomorrow Yeah, big baby, man. He was man. I loved him Snoop. I hooked I reached out to him Snoop I did a video. I mean he did a video Snoop we posted it and so everybody kept tagging me, yo, yo, yo, my boy is a, I know this dude. So I hit him up, I'm like, yo, you smoke? I started looking, he was a heavy smoker. I'm like, I got you bro. So, and we made it happen. And he's just been a solid, he's just a solid individual. I got mad love and respect for him.
0:14:44
Okay, well, we've kind of talked about some of the woes of owning a cultivation. What has been your biggest reward?
0:14:50
Just being able to hire people that look like me and people that I grew up with. Some of them didn't make it and some of them did. Now I feel like I've given those guys an opportunity to go and eat for the rest of their lives because they know how to grow it. With all the other states opening up, these guys can feed their families They can teach their kids and they can start the general generational wealth and that goes back to what I was sitting earlier Is that I like I love that part more than anything is being able to help provide. I want to leave the legacy I want the things that we're doing now for there be passed down and then later on go You know this guy Larry Smith told us how to do this this this and now they're still doing it even when I'm gone from this planet, you know what I'm saying? Absolutely. Different plane. I wish, I hope we can see or, you know, see what's going on.
0:15:46
Peek in and everything.
0:15:47
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
0:15:48
That's what I mean. Y'all still doing it? Okay, cool, they doing it. Okay, yeah, I got you. I know things change, but that's what I like the most. And the people, like meeting the people. Not all the people I met are very good people. I mean, are celebrities. Well. No, I'm saying not all of them are celebrities. There's a lot of other people who are celebrities that are just as important to me as those people. Shannon and Brandon from Western Green Momma Labs out in Atalanta, which is the NBA basketball player, Paul Pierce is as part of his group. But those two guys have been very instrumental in helping me and I'm helping them. So it's been dope to meet those kind of people. And to to do things me and Shannon, Shannon, Shannon owns a limo company out there. So if you haven't been in LA, you can need a limo company. And he in the pandemic, I ended up buying a limo with him. So that's what I mean by like this other opportunities have come out of this. And so now we get paid to have a limo.
0:16:45
Well, that's just you in general. I think that the people that are around you that know you, they know that. You know what I'm saying? Like if there's a good flip, you know, business opportunity.
0:16:55
Yeah, absolutely.
0:16:57
It's taking a minute, you know, cause things are changing now. The technology, the way we do business, the way things are, I don't think people understand. And I keep saying it cause I want people to be prepared, but the game is changing. Life is changing right before our eyes. We're in a generation of wealth. I believe this year, you're gonna see digital currency come in, right? So like the game is changing. Like, it's you, people better wake up, like and get prepared. It's gonna be serious.
0:17:27
So changing gears, I want your opinion on this because you know, last episode we did talk about the thoughts on cannabis being able to cross the border and being able to sell cannabis legally in other cities. How do you feel about that? I think that would be great. As a small business owner. I would love,
0:17:45
listen, I wouldn't have three-fourths the problems if I could package it up and ship it off to New York or North Carolina where Big Baby is or these places. I would get the proper amount of money that that we need and to function
0:17:58
and it would be awesome. I would love it. Yeah, I think some cities it would be a benefit, especially like Vegas, because you just slap Vegas on it and everybody will want to taste it, but maybe some of the smaller cities. One of the issues they were saying is, okay, if we allow it to cross borders, some of the cities that are legal, like Kentucky, now they're finally writing a bill for it to be legal in the state of Kentucky. So once it becomes legal, all the other cities that are already up and functioning, they're going to flood the market so now the growers in Kentucky may have a struggle. So what do you, how do you think?
0:18:31
Well, that's the problem. I just think it should be legal. I think, you know, I'm not saying, I mean, it's a very difficult situation. I mean, it's a plant. What I've learned about this plant is, I mean, the plant teaches you a lot. First of all, let's be clear, the plants are all women. So let's just start there. They teach you a lot, right? And I feel like game comes from women. Women, you know, there's a lot of game to come from a woman.
0:18:55
I heard that.
0:18:56
Right? And I think about, so I was interested, I'm going to kind of go off, but it's going to make sense. I was listening to a podcast today with Joe Rogan and he had a beekeeper on and she was talking about obviously the queen bee, right? But then she also talked about how the majority of the bees are women. There's only a few males. The males are just there to populate and they done, right? But the majority of the work is being done by women. So like when I think about those type of deals and I'm sitting here looking like, what's the correlation between why are these plants all female, right? And then why are these bees all female, right? There's something to that to me, right? And then when I look at the population of the world, there's an eight to one woman to man ratio, I believe the last time I looked. So it's one of those things, it's like, why is that? What's going on? But it's a complicated issue because it was up to me, let's just keep the West Coast growing all the weed or cannabis and send it all home. But I know that's not realistic, right? Because we know that the West Coast has the better climate to grow. Yeah. Right? But the problem we're going to run into now is that you look into Kentucky's and Louisville and all these places. Yeah, come on. They got farmland.
0:20:11
Right?
0:20:12
Good soil.
0:20:13
Good soil. But the problem is the conditions, right? So now there has to be certain temperatures and whatnot. But this is where I feel like big pharma is going to get in. Big tobacco is getting in. More importantly, what people don't realize is alcohol has gotten in before everybody. Alcohol is smart. Alcohol is saying, you know what? The numbers are going down for people drinking alcohol. They're starting to consume more cannabis. So what do they do? They get in. So now it doesn't matter.
0:20:40
Yeah, I always thought it was weird here in Vegas. You have to have a alcohol distributor license in order to deliver cannabis. But you can't serve both in the same establishment.
0:20:51
So yeah, that's that's I'm saying like they have things. They have things so messed up. You know, I was telling someone the other day that I didn't, you know, when I go to baseball, I love sports. So you go to baseball and Jackie Robinson was the first African-American to play in the in the major leagues and he was met with a lot of resistance. Excuse me. He couldn't go and eat with the other players. He could I mean the white players He couldn't get called the n-word all the time And I feel like I'm not getting called those things I can't but I feel like Jackie Robinson where the first ones in as African Americans and it's brutal You know, I I kind of wish now I was Hank Aaron the brothers that follow him Afterwards, you know, we're going through and we're getting hit and it's like nobody cares at the end of the day. They just want their cannabis and go. I mean, there's a lot of people that do mess with us and I'm so thankful for that. I think that we do provide a good quality brand I was talking about. So here's another story that's kind of funny to me. Like, so, um, where, where was some, where, what a group of friends and we're here. And so the, so Paul Pierce's grow grows pink meek as well. So Cam had a function here. So I had my RG5 Las Vegas was in a white package and theirs is in a purple package. And it was kind of funny because Cam had all these people from all over New York, Pittsburgh, Ohio, Miami. They were from all over, right? So they're sitting in the room. And I went to the dispensary, bought some, put it on the table. They brought theirs in from California. And they're just, hey, so it ain't no big deal. We didn't do nothing. We didn't bring pals and all that. I just want to clarify that in case the CCB board is listening. They be stalking us. We're going to cut that out. Yeah, yeah. No, no, no, put it in there. I don't care. We didn't do nothing wrong. So I look up and, you know, the guys are sitting there and they're like, yo, the one in the white bag is the one. And all these guys, yeah, the white one is on fire. And it was funny to me because Cam looked at me and we just kind of smiled. And he was like, the other one's from LA. And everyone thinks that LA has the better, better.
0:23:00
Automatically.
0:23:01
Yeah, which, listen, I won't dispute that they don't have some of the best cannabis in the world. It is, it's just a fact. But at the same time, it's one of those things that here we are in Vegas. And what I will say about our cannabis is it's clean. And that's important. That's very important for me.
0:23:16
Definitely is. You know, it took me to go on a tour on some other cultivations to realize, it's really important to know how they are, how they function on a day to day. You know, some people don't require you to wear the gloves. They don't require you to spray down with alcohol. They don't require you to do these things, which ultimately help you keep your your plant clean and safe and free from because you'd be surprised if you touch your phone and then touch the cannabis how tainted it could now be. Yes. So it's very important to stay on top of that.
0:23:50
Yeah I'm gonna mention Maribel. Maribel, boy she is the pit bull. I went in one day with my shoes out, my booties on. Oh man I gotta, can everybody think it's just them, or she be bugging with them? It's everybody. It's me included. She does not play. Because it's important. If we fail, that's money down the drain for us. So she's just protecting the brand, and she's protecting our money as well.
0:24:16
Like you said, being the queen bee.
0:24:17
Yeah, 100%.
0:24:19
So I know we got to get out of here, Wesley. I want to give a shout out to Wesley on air. OK, thank you for working with me. We'll have to cut this up together. But I do want to mention this because I feel like it wasn't until today when Taylor actually came in and mentioned it that I felt like, okay, I'm not experiencing this by myself. It feels like the pressure of going into a new year that you're supposed to be rejuvenated, you're supposed to be ready to start fresh, you're supposed to be ready to hit the ground running on the first. But it just does not feel that way for some people. And it was interesting because the room that I was in, it was like four or five other people. It's like, yeah, me too, me too. So it's just like the heaviness of the pressure of getting it right and being this person when you really don't feel like it. What I found very interesting, you've heard of the sprinkle, the sprinkle, the spring equinox and winter solstice and things like that so traditionally in the Roman calendar they didn't start the new year until March like winter time is still hibernation winter time is still where we can kind of you know get rid of the thing recognize what we need to get rid of and work on that it doesn't have to be instant especially you know we're not outside as much thankful we live in Vegas so we get a little bit more sun than more people. But the lack of sun, the lack of being outside to be able to renew your energy definitely plays a role in how you're able to deal with things. And then the holidays, of course, it brings up a lot of other things. So if you're an entrepreneur, and you're kind of struggling right now, I want you to stay at it, keep going. I was listening to a podcast earlier today and he was just like, just do one small thing that helps you get towards your goal. You know, I think a lot of times we look for to get big chunks done to feel like we've accomplished something, but sometimes just getting up, getting dressed and getting one thing done is good enough for the day.
0:26:16
Singles and doubles in baseball, that's all I want. Singles, I'm trying to hit a home run every time. Singles and doubles. And what I will say is this, and then I'll close it up on my end. This is a time to grind. When everyone else is sleeping, like this is a time when they'd say, the inflation is up and the economy's down. This is what I've always thrived because I know everyone else is sitting around listening to that. And I'm not, I'm like, yo, hold on a second here. I gotta get another job, not a problem. I'm gonna get my seven, eight hours sleep, but you can best believe in them other hours, it's go time. And while everyone else is sitting there pouting, I'm stacking, I'm moving, I'm going, and that's where people fail at. 97, I'll give you this, 97% of people can't stand prosperity. You can give it to them and they'll give it away, give it right back to you.
0:27:11
What does that mean?
0:27:13
They can't stand prosperity. You can I could if I gave 100 people $100,000 in three months, 97 of them won't have that 100,000 anymore.
0:27:22
That's poor financial management. It doesn't mean you hate it. You just don't understand what to do and how to
0:27:29
that's prosperity. And they don't want it. They want to be broke. They like that they want it.
0:27:41
I don't know why people,
0:27:41
I don't understand why people can't take 100,000 and go take 5,000, put that 95,000 up and just slowly. Question, do you have a thing that you're passionate about
0:27:53
or is it just the grind in itself? I love it all. I love when he sends me a check from the limo.
0:27:59
It might only be $300. See, because you mentioned limo, then you mentioned personal injury, then you mentioned
0:28:04
I love those. I don't care if it's $100. I love it.
0:28:08
Bet, you know, I love it.

There's a lot of things that I want to change and I don't want to reveal them just yet, but I'm going through the process with someone in the legislature to get some things done. Okay. All right. Well, we'll come back and talk about that.

Questions. No, thank you guys for having me. I appreciate the love and I appreciate what you do for g5 Anything I ask you always there you on point You know, and I have some pretty weird things sometimes, and things are starting to pick up a little bit more for me. Like I said, this is, you know, when you talk about entrepreneurs get down too. So, you know, when you start to get back in that mental space when it's time to go. So, and you've been patient with me. I know there's times when I'm like, no, hold up, we gotta do this, hold up. A lot of holdups going on, but now we're in a space we're gonna start moving more. We have been moving more and getting things done. You know, I got to plant seeds on another side to get that other side going as well. So but I appreciate everything and thank you for having me on.
0:29:46
I really do. Absolutely. I appreciate, you know, being being able to be around and just watching you work and how you and how you do it. You know, you're willing to take a L if it means that everyone else gets to, you know, take care of their business and making sure they're taken care of. And so it's not a lot of leaders that are like that.

Payday's a rough sometimes for me. Look up and you got a couple of dollars, you're like, well, I'll be home all weekend.
0:30:09
But it is what it is.
0:30:09
You have to sacrifice. The team is, people are doing their job and they're getting things done. And at the end of the day, if there's nothing left sometimes, that's how it is. But I'm prepared for that. Cause I know there's other times where I have other things that is good for me too. Absolutely.
